The Artsplus after school arts education project

2007 saw the Arts Plus after school arts education project continue into its second stage. Arts Plus aims to provide life-skills training to young Mongolians and to preserve unique Mongolian arts and cultural traditions through arts-based after school programs at schools Number 35, Setgemj Complex School and Special School Number 29.

During the first stage of the project in 2006, 15 arts teachers from the partner schools developed skills in modern interactive teaching techniques and in writing curricula for drama, dance and design. Through this program, capacity building in the areas of curriculum writing and modern interactive teaching techniques has taken place amongst arts teachers at each of the partner schools and a group of professional artists and teachers developed curriculums on drama, dance and design and training sessions on interactive teaching methods were conducted among 25 teachers from selected schools.

In 2007 the trained teachers conducted the after-school arts education programs in their schools. The sessions were based on the newly developed curricula, with strong cultural heritage component to encourage students to learn and explore traditional Mongolian culture and arts, including written, oral and performance practices. The trained teachers are now working at their own schools and conducting the after-school arts education classes based on the newly developed curriculums for almost 400 children.

Also, partnerships have been established between Mongolian and international arts and education organizations. One of the great achievements of this project is the demonstration that through after school arts programs, arts education can be incorporated in to the formal education system.

This project creates a learning opportunity using interactive teaching methods which allows young Mongolians to develop their personal, cognitive and relationship skills and to engage young Mongolians in the performance and visual arts with the objective of providing alternative vocational opportunities. The programs also include a strong cultural heritage component to encourage students to learn and explore traditional Mongolian cultural and arts practices of written, oral and performance elements with the aim of developing the communication, problem solving and analytical skills of students.
