Big Day Out
program at Opera and Ballet
Theater
Because many young people in Mongolia
have little or no access to
classical art particularly
those from regional or disadvantaged
areas, this project is aimed to provide Mongolian school students, particularly from rural and disadvantaged areas, with monthly access to performances of classic arts and was implemented successfully in collaboration with the Opera and Ballet Academic Theater.
The first Big Day Out Program
was organized with the performance
of Chinggis khaan opera on
May 25, 2006. The Big Day
Out included interactive arts
education programs as well
as fine art and meeting with
artists and actors. The monthly event
was organized in series
and offered up to 3000 schoolchildren
the opportunity to attend
a performance of opera or
ballet and go backstage to
see what really goes on in
order to bring a performance
together. Participants had
the chance to meet with performers,
musicians, stage crew and
other creative staff and talk
with them about the production
and about what it means to
work in the arts industry
in Mongolia . This program
is a llong term, ongoing project
for both the Arts Council
and the Opera and Ballet Theater.
As a result of the project, a special curriculum was developed for each of the performances that includes: explanatory audio, video materials, history of the pieces and photos based on the chosen opera and the ballet pieces. The project was funded by the KHAN Bank of Mongolia and Mr.Walter Jenkins, president of ‘Inclusive Solutions’, USA.
